ANNUAL BOAT RACE (north blue event)

The beaming sun glared off of the murky water of the Lyneel Kingdom docks. Crowds had swarmed along the coastline in attempts to get a decent view at the race. Contestants forming at the start line were greeted by a stout man on a wooden pedestal. His sausage-like fingers curled around the edge of the stand, and he coughed curtly to clear his throat. "We are gathered here today," he paused, eying the crowd, "to bear witness to the annual, Lyneel Kingdom Boat Race!" A once silent crowd erupted into cheers and hollers, placing the sound level at a roar. The announcer kept his cool, but after a few moments extended his hands as if to silence the crowd.

Leaning forward on his pedestal, thick lips parted once more. "Contestants. Step forth and divide yourselves into pairs of two," he cooed. His pudgy hands gestured to the front of the docks, and he allowed them a few moments to step forth and align themselves into small groups. If participants were friends before the event, it'd be interesting to see where their relationships ended afterwards. When the competitors had finished dividing themselves. A small mouse-like man would scurry up the marina, leaning towards the announcer and whispering something into his ear.

His expression shifted noticeably to one of more excitement. Good news. "Thanks to our incredible preparation crew, the boats have been prepped with haste. Board them soon, for the race shall begin thereafter," he announced. Once more the crowd burst into cheers, and the excitement picked up. Gesturing to the contestants, the man stepped down from his stand and led them down the pier. Five dinghies, ten feet in length, were docked along the harbor.

Each dinghy had a single mast, supporting both the mainsail and the headsail. The vessels housing just enough room for a maximum capacity of two sailors. With strong wind currents blowing along the coast of this side of the island, the first half of the race would be quite interesting and fast paced. That's assuming that the participants had a clue of what they were doing. Tucked within the bow of each boat is an additional ten feet of rope, as well as, a mysterious blue box.

Stepping onto the dock with Triton, it was obvious the two would be partners. As she walked towards the vessels, she was more than likely to turn a few heads thanks to her attire and hair color. The Captain of the Sea Kings was wearing black denim shorts and black and white sneakers. A matching black jacket covered her torso but was left open down the front, revealing a bright red bikini top and a scarlet tatoo down her sternum.

Hotaru examined the boats, finding them all to be identical. As the first to step forward, the advantage of choosing a boat was granted to her.

“Boat 1.”

Stepping onto the boat farthest to the left, she was pleased with the tactical position it gave them. With only 1 threat from the beginning to their right, they were in prime placement to take and keep an early lead while the inner boats clashed amongst themselves. Taking a stand at the front of the small vessel, Hotaru waited for triton to follow and for the race to begin, her spear fully extended and held at the ready. Being the heavier of the two, Triton would take spot to the rear and man the helm while Hotaru handled the sails.

With mild reluctance, Gabriel would find himself accompanying Sergei in today's event. The crimson Commodore's eyes blanketed over the row of boats that were different than their own. And surely by different, he meant of the lesser tiers of vessels. Following closely beside him, he wondered which boat the behemoth of a marine would enjoy the most. He was particularly indifferent to the options presented before him but would choose a vessel anyway. The thought of them sinking due to Sergei's size alone playing around in his head like a constant joke that he kept locked beneath tongue and key.

"You're larger and stronger, so you should manage the rear hull of the boat. Leave the sails up to myself, or do you prefer another way to tackle this?"

It was only his silent confidence that led him to believe that this would be a fine race. His confidence wasn't propelled by the lust for victory, but instead the eagerness to see what obstacles floated upon the sea. Calmly, he edged himself to the boat in the very center. The opponents that would spring forth and the danger of the position wasn't anything that he worried about.

Sergei grinned to himself at the grim thoughts of what he could do to all the competitors. To the challenges that await them. It's not like he was looking for blood, but the thought, idea, smell, and taste of the Pirates in the area tended to really drive him close to the edge. Even if there was no possible way to know who was a Pirate and who wasn't, paranoia in a public place for a guy like him was just an everyday occurrence. "I can take the back. Weight goes in our favor in this position. Plus I can find ways to get rid of pursuers." He laughed heartily, loving the exhilaration coursing through his blood as he relished in the sea breeze and the salty scent of the air. The ocean was where he lived, and breathed. Even as Sergei stepped onto the center ship, their ship, he spent a few seconds watching the waters, before immediately snapping back into action, his eyes surveying the area around him. Well, Triton looked like he was about to experience his first ever boat race, he had been partnered up with his Captain for an exciting event that seemed to be annual on this island - and of course where there was competition like this, there was the possibility of treasure, I mean there had to be something for winning this, right? With a stretch and a yawn the large man would step onto the dock, the bright rays of light warming his skin as they gleamed off the waters surface. He was travelling light considering the size of these boats, ivory hair held back with a bright red bandana, his torso bare and legs half covered with a pair of black shorts, thick boots identical in colour being his choice in footwear. Oh, and the giant anchor held in his hands, he couldn't forget that bad boy!

"Such fragile little things, huh?"

He spoke jokingly about the boats as they approached, their size not making them the most comfortable form of transportation for Triton, but he supposed he'd have to put up with it. With a single step off the dock he'd drop into the back of the boat, sitting down on his seat and looking around, taking in his surroundings and the approaching competitors - most noticeable being the large man a few boats down, seeing as he was actually bigger than Triton.

"At least I'm not that big, right?"

Quite the mild day for a boat ride. It was never truly warm in North Blue as it was in the other blues. But to a person born in Miqueot, this seemed comfortably warm. A slight breeze wafted perpendicular to the sea. Lilith's short hair brushed in front of her face and her hand rose quietly to tuck it behind her ear. North Blue was where she felt most comfortable. It would be quite the change when she finally left for the Grand Line or joined a fleet at long last. Above all, she would miss the snow and the bite of chill around her face.

Shrugging off these down heartening thoughts, Lilith crossed the dock, trying very hard not to trip on any nails or uneven planks. For a showing in the boat race, specifically important for someone that hadn't met her partner yet, it would be disastrous to trip on the dock before the race even began. So the young woman put on a tough face and somehow juggled herself until she was in a boat.

There she waited quietly enjoying the scene and ambiance that the docks provided. Hopefully someone would be joining her in her boat at some point as taking on teams of two alone would be quite the challenge. The other crewmen looked capable too. One of the others was even a vice admiral. Quite the crowd after all.

Such an event was something that Cain had seen many times over. Expected, considering he was a citizen of said kingdom, after all. Every year, he stood by the docks, watching the race occur, banned to partake in such an event by both his uncle and his father, when either was still alive. They saw it unnecessary, a waste of time and more importantly, an opportunity to lose Cain to the temptation of the sea. Little did they know, that it only served to fuel the flames of desire within the young man's heart. The world was simply too large for one to stay in a single island. Cain wanted to see the world. He wanted to see it all. But first thing's first, the little steps. Perhaps this race could help Cain in a way. A chance for him to display what he had learned from watching the race over the years. A chance for him to impress other seafarers. And perhaps a chance to catch the attention of, say, a pirate captain to get himself a chance to enter a freedom-loving crew. It was all Cain had been waiting for these past few weeks, after all. He arrived at the scene soon enough, clad in a white wifebeater under his distinct black leather jacket, a pair of cream-coloured pants and black leather shoes completed the attire. He wore his short crimson cloak, the apparel hanging by a silver chain around his collars. Strapped onto his left waist was Harpe, his unique sword. He stood by the docks, a wide smirk on his face, as his blue eyes moved from ship to ship. All those that had boarded, it seemed, had their own partners, save one black-haired female. Bingo. Cain slid over to her boat, standing at the edge of the wharf as he gave a soft bow. "Hello there, mi'lady. May I?" He inquired with a rather smooth tone, but before she could even answer, Cain would hop off the dock and right onto the boat, as he slightly bent his knees to get used to the swaying of the small boat. It was, to say the least, an ideal vehicle for a two-man job. Cain glanced around, before turning to her. "Pleasure to meet you. Name's Cain." He introduced himself briefly, giving a rather confident smirk as he took a step back, moving himself closer to the rear of the ship. Piratically teeming with anticipation, Mai was in a constant motion in swaying her body from side to side as the announcer voiced off the stipulations. She took delight in petty competition. It gave her time to show off her competitive edge away from her usual conservative attitude. Turning her attention to the docks, she'd take head on the words describing their sailing condition. The boats were pretty compact and nearly identical aside from the numbers labeled on each one. Choices, she had so many. Regardless of how just about identical each one was, she was being quite fickle. Strolling past the first boat as it had already been claimed, she'd eye down the rest closing noticing small imperfections and mishaps from small chipped off piece of wood or a few leaves that straggled their way on board. Swifting across the deck, her shoes clanking against the surface as if knocking on wood, she'd plant her figure down on boat number eight. "Hmmmm?" Something peculiar caught a twinkle in her crimson eyes. A flower fallen from the sky carried by wind onto the deck. It was as if the Blooming Rose herself was calling on to Mai, as this would be the chosen dinghy for her and her partner to ride into the open blue. The fated action won her over, as claim the boat as her's by placing herself upon it's wooden exterior. Speaking of which, where was her destined partner in crime for the ride? Her eyes searched for the man in red with the snow white hair. Oh where, oh where is that man Nathan? "Oh where could he be...?"

Looking around the crowd, he sighed a little, aiming to lock down the location of his friend and First mate, Mai. It was her damn fault he was here to begin with! After healing his injuries and such she had insisted that he get out and get his body working again, especially something that would work his abdomen, since he had to lay off of that entirely for a few weeks. "Oh, there she is. Hey, MAI!" He called out, raising his arm above the shorter folks in the crowd and waving. If there was one thing that did set him apart it was the crimson red trench coat he always wore, and the peculiar alignment of the belts that held it over his chest. Walking over to the docks in front of boat eight, he knelt down and observed the dinghy that she had already seemed to have picked. While Nathan was not particularly fickle with these things so long as they worked as intended. "Looks like you got us a boat alright. I don't see anything wrong with it and so far it seems like its not booby-trapped or anything..." Scratching his head quizzically, he turned his curious gaze up to Mai. BEGIN!

Having boarded their ships, the mouse like man ran along the docks, unhooking the dinghies from the wooden pillars and tying the boats off to one another. A larger white boat, twenty-five feet in length, and covered in a fine metal flesh that slickly cut through the waters surface. Propelled by jet, this boat maneuvered into a position where it could tie the boats in a single file line behind it. Once every sail boat had been situated, the announcer boarded the jet propelled vessel, and led the sequence of boats out to sea.

Perpendicular to the shore, the boats were then untied at a from one another at the simple flick of his wrists. The short pudgy fellow breathed heavily, though his display of rope tying hinted at a strange power, for he hadn't touched any of them with his hands. It was as if some unknown force has unraveled the bindings, and left the dinghies drifting and swaying three meters from one another out in open sea. Clearing his throat with a concise 'ahem' the gruff announcer began to speak one more, parting his thick lips in the attempt. "Before you set sails, and the race begins, I have one more thing to add," he stopped, eying each participant that now formed a line facing his boat. "The boat that crosses the finish like first, shall be declared winner. You may use anything on board your ship to gain advantage over your rival competitors, so be smart and resourceful. If you are knocked from your vessel, my boat will stop to help you once. Fall out again, and your teammate will be forced to complete the race by themselves," he shouted, over the 'caws' of seagulls circling overhead.

His boat propelled down the line of sail boats, passing each small crew with an encouraging nod. In sequence from farthest from shore, to closest: hotaru and triton, gabriel and sergei, lilith and cain, the last boat occupied by mai and nathaniel. Reaching the end of the line, his alabaster vessel spun to face them once more. "May Poseidon bless you in your travels...Begin!" he shouted with great enthusiasm. It was at this point that the contestants would be required to hoist their sails and embark forth in their race around the island. The water directly ahead seemed to be rather bumpy, a great wind pushing from behind them. The quickest to raise their sails would pull ahead from the start, but there would be many obstacles that lay ahead. Especially those left behind for one another. It would definitely take some searching to find resources available to them in the immediate area. Hopefully some would have the wit to do so.

After being dragged out to sea, Hotaru took the opprotunity to size up the competition. Directly next to them was a pair of men who appeared to be marines. One was huge, even bigger than Triton, and he had what looked like two shields strapped to his back. The other was much smaller in comparison; his only visible weapons were metal gauntlets fastened to his forearms. Beyond the marines were 2 pairs comprised of one male and one female, but they were too far away and obstructed to get any useful observations from. Anticipating the start, Hotaru stabbed the spear into the wood, securing it so it wouldn't fall off the boat from motion or turbulence.

BEGIN

As soon as they had the given the signal, Hotaru sprang into action. Moving as quickly as she could muster, she raised the sails in order to get their boat moving in the earliest time possible. As she worked, she kept her eyes out for any surprise attacks from the other contestants, however, the two next to them didnt appear to have any weapons suited for ranged combat.

If their sails were raised without incident, the would be off to a quick start thanks to her superior agility. Violet eyes took another look around the small boat, finding a coil of rope and a blue box. She kicked the strange container and shouted to her companion.

"Think we should open it?"

In due time, the population that entered into the boating event increased to competitive numbers. As more people came, Gabriel found himself zoning out as he stared at the vast depths of the sea. He was sure that Sergei was doing the exact opposite. He had to be bewildered by any of the opposition he didn't know or dressed overly freely. Of course anyone that hadn't introduced themselves to the behemoth or wasn't recognizable, just had to be a pirate in Sergei's perspective. But the casual daydreaming dropped to a sharp end with the arrival of a man that made hasty preparations to get the event underway. Intertwining and stretching his digits, Gabriel's eyes fell on the mysterious blue box located in the rear of the vessel. No one had no clue what it was and Gabriel wasn't too excited to figure out.

"I guess you'll have the job of opening the box when you see fit. You're closest to it anyway."

It was a reasonable option unless the bulked specimen wanted different. So with the message to begin, Gabriel opened the sails and the vessel burst forward at a generous pace. He didn't wonder much about anyone around him as his face continued to scan the ocean left and right.

With his impressive strength, he was able to hull the sails up in the air and tied the rope down that maintained the sails in no time. Where normal people would have to exert force to do what he did, he did it with ease thanks to his strength. With the ship sails ready, it quickly took off with the wind blowing against it, giving Sergei time to investigate his surroundings. On both sides of the ship, the distance from ship side to ship side was just over ten meters. Not within range of any major attack, but with quick movements, can be maneuvered into to attack. That is, if they were planning to. For now, no attack would be needed. The first obstacle would have to be realized first before they could act. "Box?" Sergei asked curiously, and quickly saw what his partner was referring to, and in no time, pulled it out, as well as the feet of rope that was resting underneath it. Tucking the rope into his pants, Sergei looked over to his partner, and shrugged as the ship moved with the wind down the race, no apparent leader just yet, toward their first goal. Deciding not to wait, Sergei, holding the box far away from his face, quickly popped the box open, glancing inside while making sure nothing surprising would jump out and attack him. While they were moved around, Triton didn't worry to pay much attention to the man speaking, he was having fun with his own preparations. With calm movements he unwrapped his anchor, leaning it against the side of the boat while still gripped in his hand - his role in this contest becoming more obvious by the second as he looked around. With him positioned in the back of the boat, and with his hefty weapon, it would be his job to work for any advantage they could - and with Triton's set of skills, that meant to take out other competitors, quickly as he could.

"Well, alright then. . ."

Blue eyes watched as Hotaru quickly prepared the sails, and along with the rest of the contestants they would be off. It was however during this that the very first opening would be spotted, and with one swift move, Triton would aim to knock out the first duo from the race - a pair of Marines no less.

As stated before, these boats were barely room for two, so most people paired off front and back as to balance the boat - big man over here would instead take it upon himself to walk to the front of the boat, all to take a look.

Not only were they both seemingly distracted in the front of their boat, but the shift of weight would've left their boat probably pretty unbalanced - and not to mention the entire back end completely unguarded.

You see, the boats weren't TEN meters apart, they were only three, leaving them entirely in range for an attack, and that's just what Triton planned to do. With a mighty swing of his anchor, he would use the chain the increase the range of his attack, and with a vicious display of strength, aim the smash the entire back end of their boat. With the big man distracted with the box at the front, he obviously wouldn't see it coming (especially since he thought they were 10 meters apart, silly), and when you added in the fact his sheer size would block his smaller companion, in addition to making the unbalanced boat hard to walk across in the first place.

Being so close, the size of the weapon alone was basically enough to ensure a hit - but it was his strength that would make the difference. His power would grant him the ability to smash right through the small wooden boat, and of course with the back end of their boat opened up, all that weight on the front would probably flip them right over - unless they took on water instead?

Considering this was supposed to be for fun, it was surprising that people were already trying to smash each others' boats. Some man with a giant hunk of metal was trying to hit the back of a competitor's vessel which brought on a feeling of relief in Lilith's habitual feeling of discomfort when she wasn't holding on to her sword at her waist. That was why, even if she wasn't wearing her marine coat, which she wasn't today, that she held on to her katana at her side. It played opposites with her dark outfit and its white sheath anyway. Made her look a little more dangerous and stand out than usual.

Her partner by chance was a blonde haired man seemingly nice enough. Lilith was rather shy around new people and clumsy at that. She would probably do something stupid and fall overboard at some point or another. Her face turned red just thinking about something that embarrassing. It was a good thing she was looking ahead as this was all happening. "Sure. We should set sail or they will get a head start on us." Lilith gripped her sword quietly and made sure to look out for any other saboteurs.

As a captain in the marines, she had already prepared the ship to make way, all the duo had to do was cut the ropes binding them to the dock and pick up some wind. It was that simple. She allowed her face to return to its normal color and walked to the back of the ship carefully and untied the ropes binding their ship.

"Since I don't know the waters around here as well as I should, we can differ to your knowledge. Whatever that might be." She said in a rather whimsical voice as if it didn't really matter all that much.
