Leading the way from the bar, Hotaru and the purple haired girl would separate from Triton and the blonde swordsman. She walked ahead of the navigator, silent and swift as she made her way towards the town square. Coming in from the south, the small cobblestone street suddenly opened up into a large square.
25 square meters of open space radiating out from a water fountain 4 meters wide and tall, Hotaru told Rin to "Stop" when she was 5 meters from the fountain. Hotaru continued until she was just 1 meter from the edge of the water and turned around to face her 'opponent.'
"Let's see if your attitude is up to par with your skills. As a navigator, I expect you to not only be skilled in combat, but also have a sharp mind that can adapt easily to new and difficult situations. So your test will be this. We'll have a duel right here in the town square while I ask you a series of riddles. If you get them right, the fight will continue normally. If you get it wrong or cant answer, you'll get a nasty surprise that'll be harder to defend against."
Allowing her potential crew mate to digest the terms of her test, Hotaru reached behind her and pulled the spear from its silk bindings keeping it secured to the small of her back. The weapon extended to it's full length and the two pronged point was pointed directly at Rin.
"Any questions?"
With a determined look, the pirate captain stared down her length of her weapon at the first mate. She couldnt help but hope that she got a few of her questions wrong, just for the chance to rough her up a little to pay her back for her attitude.

During this time, she outlined the terms of her "test" to which Rin apparently would need to pass if she wanted to voyage on her pirate ship. As well as picking up those words, Rin made sure to note everything about the surrounding area. A fountain, some other rather flat ground. As she registered the final sentence, she wondered what sort of surprises she could enact with her surroundings. If none, she probably meant something with her own person or weapons. Rin returned her gaze to Hotaru and smiled at her. "You haven't left much to question, so I don't think so." Rin was rather confident in her chances to solve the riddles and in combat. Hotaru whipped out a spear, which was dangerous, but Rin also had her new power and her experience in hand to hand combat from her tribe. "I might have a few surprises of my own, but we can start whenever you're ready." she said quietly. Taking a stance befitting her style of leg based fighting for the time being, Rin bent her right knee back lifting the leg up and down a fraction of an inch of the ground and back. This motion kept the blood flowing in her legs and prepared her to move at any time. Her hands were by her sides, but ready to strike if need be, and her golden flecked eyes focused, though never really lost the playful spark. Her smile also never left. Whatever the test, she was ready with sharpened mind and body. With a smile, Hotaru wasted no time in jumping right into testing the girls abilities. Dashing forward, the pirate captain closed the gap between them in a matter of moments. With her spear brandished, she thrust the weapon towards the girl's chest which would almost certainly pierce her in the stomach if she didn't get out of the way.
If she moved in time, a sweeping horizontal slice of the weapon would follow, prompting the navigator to move again out of the way of another potentially fatal strike. If the navigator wasnt quick on her feet, the test would be over without even asking the first riddle. Provided she survived, Hotaru would bide her time and watch the girl carefully and ask the first riddle.
"Sarah's father has 5 daughters. The eldest is named Appla, the next, Eppla, after her, Ippli, and after her, Opplo. What is the 5th daughters name?"
Hotaru waited for an answer, which would dictate her next attack. Would they continue to spar? Or would she try and inflict some real damage?

Luckily, Rin's body pretty much reacted on its own for the first attack as she quickly sidestepped. The attack continued, however, and adapted into a horizontal slash to which the dark skinned woman hopped over by a hair's breadth, her body parallel to the spear. Thankfully, the momentum would keep the blade going and she couldn't change the blow mid strike now. Rin landed with one hand to the ground for stabalization and both of her legs under her. To say the very least, the flame haired woman was more skilled in direct martial combat that she was. Her speed and physical capabilities exceeded hers definitively. Lady luck stayed on her side as Hotaru stopped and decided now was the time for the first riddle. As soon as she said it, a couple ideas popped into her brain, but seeing as directly in the riddle, it gave all the names of the girls, Rin spoke quietly, returning to her position at the ready. "Sarah is her name."The answer left Rin fairly sure of her accuracy, but she was ready for a strike nonetheless. Her arms were feeling a bit constricted by her beige cloak, and if the fight continued or got any more difficult, there would be no way to continue dodging with part of her body constricted. Whether she wanted to show these people or not, they were about to see a rarity in the blues... If Hotaru pressed on. Though... it seemed like there would have been a better than riddles to get what was happening done. "Maybe that was too easy."
Hotaru stated, a bit surprised that the navigator was able to answer the first question so quickly. Without letting the navigator bask in the glory of an early success, Hotaru would continue the test immediately. Rushing forward, her spear point aimed directly at the girls face as she gave the weapon a quick thrust. Provided she got out of the way, a flurry of thrusts would follow follow her opponent wherever she went, meaning the girl would need to remain in constant motion in order to stay alive. As she attacked, she spoke the next riddle, not giving Rin the luxury of resting in order to think about the correct answer.
"I have villages without homes, seas without sand, roses without gardens, and countries without land. What am I?
Her assault would continue at a rapid but predictable pace. Careful maneuvering would keep Rin safe, however, getting the riddle wrong would yield a nasty surprise from Hotaru's spear. Even if she tried to flee, Hotaru's agility would allow her to keep up with the navigator and continue the barrage of potential blows. Could the navigator answer the simple riddle in the heat of combat? Only time would tell. [/blockquote]

Her swift attacks were quite hazardous, and the tan skinned woman didn't really want to test her ability against such a dangerous opponent yet, but if it came to that, she was confident in her own ability to protect herself, no matter the untested nature of her defensive technique. "Perhaps a bit..." She murmured, eyeing the tip of the fire lady's spear again. With no time to rest her body, Hotaru advanced, swiftly thrusting her spear at Rin's head. Even if it wouldn't pierce... letting Hotaru break her nose wasn't exactly on the agenda. Thus she started to move swiftly and with a fluidity gained from constant practice sparring in her childhood. But despite her practice, the fiery woman was quicker than Rin was used to. She was able to avoid the attacks, but not by as much as she would have liked. Not only that, her cloak was still constricting her. In between the thrusts, she asked the next riddle. This time, however, her attention was strained having to dodge and continue moving while she thought. After about three more thrusts, Rin went ahead and answered with another fairly confident quip. "A... map... I suppose..." She said, dodging a thrust between each quick burst of speech. As she finished, Rin thrust one leg into the ground and sent herself back a few meters in one go. Her legs were burning a bit from the exertion, but Rin still had plenty of energy where that came from if need be. With another correct answer, Hotaru resisted the urge to deliver a powerful strike to her enemy. She was actually doing better than Hotaru had though, which made her feel she had to increase the difficulty of the following riddles.
"Get ready for number 3!"
She said watching the girl jump away. Following suit, she planted the point of her trident into the ground and sprung forward, vaulting herself into the air and towards the navigator. As soon as she was airborn, she re directed the point of the spear towards the middle of Rin's chest, and planned on using the momentum to aid in her strike. Not expecting to make contact, she swung the the weapon vertically, coming down about a meter and a half away from the purple haired navigator.
Standing where she landed, she asked the next riddle while keeping her guard up.
"A small time crook in Loguetown who supplies me information lies a lot. Actually, everything he says is a lie except for on 1 day a week. He has told me 'I lie on Mondays and Tuesdays.' The next day he said, 'Today is either Thursday, Saturday or Sunday.' The next day he said, 'I lie on Wednesdays and Fridays.' Tell me, on which day does my source tell the truth?"
Not waiting for an answer, Hotaru rushed forward, sweeping her spear from left to right at Rin's knees from over a meter away. If her opponent jumped, she would redirect the momentum upwards, following her target into the air. If she moved in any other direction, a quick barrage of thrusts would force her to keep moving as Rin attempted to try to solve the riddle which, hopefully, was a bit harder than the last two. Still, it was plenty hard to continue defending against her attacks as it was without attacking in her own right. Then again, that wasn't really what Hotaru was testing. Logic under fire seemed to be more or less the quality she was looking and testing her for now. And to get off this boring hunk of cold earth, Rin would submit to at least this much. The woman wouldn't give any breaks for when Rin increased the distance a little, she vaulted into the air directing that spear at her again. Rin moved smoothly to the side and jumped onto the edge of the fountain as Hotaru recited the third riddle. This one required more logic than the last ones, and was quite confusing if one did not think it through, which she did not allow Rin to do. Her spear came flying at Rin's knees, which didn't really perturb the tan skinned woman too much. Instead of continuing to run, Rin started to block the attacks with the hidden steel guards on the bottom half of her legs. This gave her a few seconds to think in which she tossed a few things around. Logic was a strong suit of Rin and she felt pretty confident about her answer after only a short bout of defense. "Monday... is the answer." She said, taking a breath and trying to keep up with the swift movements of the spear. Blocking was easier than running, but Hotaru wouldn't just let her continue to block if she wanted to continue this test, obviously she would aim higher. Rin hoped that the test would end soon and this red head would just accept that she had some logical skills and welcome her to the ship. But, she supposed, that would be all too easy. Nope.
As her spear started to clash against the shin guards of the purple haired navigator, Hotaru heard the incorrect answer from her opponent, and that was all the reason she needed to literally blow the girl off her feet. The jet dial installed on the end of the spear was suddenly activated, sending a powerful blast of of air into the girls chest without warning. The gust of air had enough force to send Rin tumbling backwards to the edge of their arena. Assuming it hit, and there was little reason that it wouldn't, she would be knocked off her feet as she flew back from the attack.
Take them one at a time and assume he is telling the truth on each of the three days that he makes a statement. Then assume he is not telling the truth on any of the days that he makes a statement. The only case that works is the one where he is telling the truth on the third day. On that third day, from the statements he made, he lies on Wednesdays and Fridays. He tells the truth on Mondays and Tuesdays. Yesterday was not Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. That means that he couldn't be telling the truth Monday because yesterday can't be Sunday and therefore, he must tell the truth on Tuesdays.
As soon as the punishment for the wrong answer had been delivered, Hotaru dashed forward, chasing her potentially downed target with her spear pointed right at her.
"Get up!"
Hotaru yelled, sweeping the ground with her weapon in an attempt to force Rin back onto her feet if she had fallen. Wasting no time, she would shout another riddle at her target while stabbing forward with her weapon a few times during delivery to keep the girl on her toes.
"After trying to fold a huge map in half, you notice that one side of the map is one meter longer than the other. Determined to get it right, you fold the map again, only to discover that now the other end of the map is a meter longer than the other. Now that you've made two folds along the map, figure out what the distance between the two folds is when expressed in centimeters."
Would she be able to figure this one out? [/blockquote]

But there was no way to avoid what was coming next. A dial, hidden in that spear launched a gust of air at her chest which Rin was only able to move a few inches the other way. The burst of wind hit her off centered in the chest and sent her spinning a few meters away where she landed in more or less the best position she could have hoped, with her hands and feet on the ground like a cat with her head still pointed toward Hotaru. Though her hair was drooped over her face and she was a bit more agitated than before. Surprises... she wasn't kidding. "Where did you get... a jet dial?" she said, still trying to catch her breath. But the fiery woman was having none of that. She moved forward again, yelling for Rin to get up. She followed instructions, vaulting herself off the ground and hand springing back three entire rotations, the last one launching her a little farther back that than. The new riddle came amidst another few attacks which Rin dodged. She was getting tired having to continue to move constantly, and that last attack had thrown her for a bit of a loop. She was having a hard time thinking as clearly as normal, but hopefully it would subside in a few seconds. In between trying to get enough air to sustain her effort and dodging strikes, she gave another answer, shrugging off her cloak and letting it fall to the ground. "100 centimeters." she stated, her wings now in rather full view to anyone in the area. The cooler air hitting her body was comforting to the skin that had been sweating in exertion the last few minutes. A sigh escaped her lips as she waited for the next answer. Without having thought it through, it was entirely possible that she was wrong. "Heh. Something I picked up on the black market. Ya like it?" Hotaru boasted, grinning as she admitted to having a Jet Dial installed within her spear. Though she didn't comment on them, she took note of the wings on the girls back.
Skypian?
She thought curiously, wondering why the girl was down here when the tales of Skypia she had heard regaled it as a beautiful and peaceful place. With a bit of new information gained about Rin, she decided that the distractions would have to wait for later. The navigator had successfully answered her latest riddle, prompting Hotaru to rush forward to deliver another.
Chasing after Rin while delivering a flurry of horizontal blows at varying heights, the next riddle was given.
"A marine crew 1000 kilometers from the red line in the calm belt has been stranded on an island and must be rescued immediately.
Unfortunately, only a small fleet of Marine vessels is available to mount a search and rescue mission , but they are only capable of carrying enough gas to go 1000 kilometers and the admiral won't sacrifice a ship for the mission.
Assuming the ships can refuel each other on the ocean, what is the fewest amount of boats it will it take to rescue the stranded marines?"
Not letting up on her assault, Hotaru would continue the barrage of spear blows until an answer was given. [/blockquote]

How Hotaru had come across one to put in her spear was quite the question. But not one that Rin had time to contemplate. The girl seemed like she was interested in the fact that her target was a from Skypiea... though she probably had it wrong. Rin was a Shandian. Being mixed up with a skypiean would be an insult to her lineage. Good thing Hotaru voiced no opinion on that fact. As nothing strange happened with the spear, and the jet dial wasn't activated again, it seemed that the previous answer was correct. Good enough, Rin presumed. But the test was apparently not over yet because the spear was in motion again in no time. Taking a deep breath, the dark skinned navigator moved back into her fluid dodging, noting that her speed was slowly decreasing as she got tired, and wondered if Hotaru was feeling the same way. Unless she had some sort of crazy stamina reserve, she probably was. As she spoke the next riddle, Rin listened. Not so much logic any more, this was almost purely mathematical in origin and calculation was something Rin was fairly good at. But this was more of a thing someone would sit down and calculate. Not only that, the riddle never specified if the ships could tug each other or go back for fuel. She supposed she would just have to guess at the specifics and throw together some logic and small math. This type of interrogation was getting a tad tiresome, so it needed some livening up. Not only that, dodging was going to tire Rin out sooner rather than later, so deciding to return fire a bit was easy. Looking for an opening in between the attacks, Rin finally saw one as she blocked one of the lower sweeps with one leg and flipped over with the other into closer range than a spear would normally allow. When there, she directed two powerful spinning kicks at Hotaru in an attempt to off balance her and get a little breathing room. As she attacked, she let her answer slide out of her mouth as well. "If the ships can go back for fuel separately. Four ships."[/style][style=width: 350px; font-family: arial; text-align: center; font-size: 8px;]Some, Sea Kings , That wasn't a riddle. Another wrong answer.
It will take 3 ships to save the sailor.
Ships A B and C take off together with full tanks of gas.
After 250 km, A uses 1/2 his fuel to refill both B and C and returns to base.
At 500 km, B refills C again, leaving B with just enough fuel to return to base.
C continues to the Sailors, rescues them, and immediately starts back with 1/2 tank of fuel. At the same time, A leaves the base with a full load of fuel to go save C.
At 500 km, with Charlie running on empty, A shares half of his remaining fuel. At the same time, B leaves the base with a full tank of gas.
At 250 km, B gives A and C each 1/4 of a tank of fuel, leaving all three just enough to return safely to base.
With another riddle solved incorrectly, Hotaru would deliver another powerful blast of air from the jet dial to Rin's stomach, likely knocking her backwards closer to the walls of a shop at the edge of the town square. Wherever Rin was thrown (or wherever she dodged), Hotaru would immediately plant her spear into the ground, launching her own body 4 meters into the air. Violet eyes locked on her target, and a powerful throw of her weapon sent the spear soaring through the air at Rin's torso. Upon impact of flesh or stone, another strong gust of wind would rip through the air, knocking back anything within 2 meters of it's point of impact. Tracking the weapons trajectory, Hotaru followed it through the air to ensure a swift and successful collection.
Taking the spear back in her grip, she would follow Rin and deliver the next riddle.
"In an attempt to relocate a large stockpile of treasure, the captain has asked you to organize the transportation to another secure location. You have four different ships full of goods, all of which travel at different speeds. In traveling form point A to point B, these vessels take one, two, four, and six days respectively.
The captain has finally given the order to set sail and takes off with the rest of the crew, leaving you with only enough workers to move 2 ships at a time (meaning the other 2 will sit abandoned and wait for your return). Knowing you can only move as fast as the slowest horse you're traveling with, what's the fewest number of days it will take to complete the treasure relocation?" [/blockquote]

These math riddles were hard to figure out when a spear was attempting to poke her and have her bleed out right there on the ground. Another burst of wind telegraphed itself by the hiss right before it launched. The tanned woman was able to dodge it by driving herself sideways and rolling out of the way. But it left her off guard. Hotaru vaulted herself into the air with the spear, giving her the advantage of height and threw her spear. The unexpected move caught Rin by surprise and she had to repeat the maneuver from before again, launching herself sideways. But this time, during her roll, a powerful birst of wind sent her tumbling off to the side with no control. When she stopped, the Shanidan woman stood up again, but she was dizzy from her most recent trip on the ground. Luckily she had a couple of seconds to recover as Hotaru took that second to say the next riddle. At this point, Rin was getting tired of the game, but remained silent until she finished. This riddle was similar, which irritated her a bit more, but she again stayed silent, continuing to defend herself by dodging. When she delivered the answer, she was fairly satisfied with it, but wouldn't let that damn jet dial surprise her again. "Thirteen days. Take one and two, bring back one, take four and six, return on two, then take one and two again." She mouthed, trying to stay moving. "Correct"
Hotaru said, retracting her weapon from an attacking position and standing it on the cobblestone road. This next and final riddle was longer and the captain would allow her rest while she thought it through.
There once was a crew of pirates who raided a marine base. Most of the crew was killed in the struggle, however, 5 survived and succeeded in stealing some valuable treasure. The pirates sit at a table in a line, each with a different profession. They have each brought home a different treasure, and whoever holds the crown will become the new captain. As a prospective new member, you must petition the new captain to join, however, they will not tell you who the new leader is. Each pirate has a unique heritage, wears different colored clothing, and has their own favorite drink. From the clues given by the crew, who will the new captain of the crew be? Keep in mind none of the owners have any trait in common, including which treasure they are in possession of.
- The Dcotor loves to wear yellow.
- The Shipwright holds the expensive carpets as his take of the treasure.
- The Cannoneer drinks rum.
- Looking from in front of the table, the pirate wearing red is directly to the left of the pirate wearing black.
